My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, 

Mark 4:35-41 On that day, when evening came, He said to them, "Let's go over to the other side." After dismissing the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. And a fierce gale of wind developed, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling [with water.] And [yet Jesus] Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be still." And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?" They became very much afraid and said to one another, "Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?" 

This story is recounted in Matthew 8:23-27 as well: 

When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. And behold, a violent storm developed on the sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves; but [Jesus] Himself was asleep. And they came to [Him] and woke Him, saying, "Save [us,] Lord; we are perishing!" He said to them, "Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?" Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. The men were amazed, and said, "What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?" 

Finally, it is in Luke 8:22-25  

Now on one of [those] days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So they launched out. But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they [began] to be swamped and to be in danger. They came up to [Jesus] and woke Him, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm. And He said to them, "Where is your faith?" But they were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?" 

In all three stories, Jesus leads his disciples into the boat. Imagine in our world how comforting that would be, KNOWING you are following the will of God, having him RIGHT THERE leading you, and telling you what to do. As we live our lives, we study God’s word so that we can hopefully discern what is good and right and lovely. We pray for strength and wisdom to follow His will and His ways in everything. It is easy to think that our service to God would be so much easier if only we had Jesus in the flesh, walking with us, telling us what to do, and seeing before our own eyes what He chooses, and how He lives. All is well as they sail away, and Jesus goes and rests. Easy to imagine that they were pretty confident that they were right where they were supposed to be, doing what they were supposed to do. 

But then the storm hits. 

Suddenly these faithful men are no longer confident that they are in the bosom of the Lord, but they are calling out “do you not care that we are perishing”, and “save us Lord”. Clearly, they have all forgotten that they followed Jesus onto the boats, and that they are doing God’s will so clearly and confidently, following Jesus' command or his example just minutes, or maybe hours, before. “Yes Lord” has fallen away, replaced by “Why Lord?”, and doubts about God’s love for them. 

How much like these disciples we are! God blesses us with everything we could need, and so much more. He has led all of us in the boat, and told us where to sail to, and every one of us has followed His voice, done what He asked, and that has brought us to this moment in our lives. But the second that it gets difficult, that the winds swirl, and the seas lash, and we start to doubt ourselves and our God, we cry out the same things. It is perhaps human nature, an instinct that we hold which our forefathers in the faith held as well. When things are nice, and following is easy, we do so confidently and draw strength and courage from doing it. But when following gets difficult, when the waves pick up, and they break over the boat, when our plans get spoiled, or when we encounter challenges, our “we are with you Lord” so quickly shifts to “why” and “Save us”. 

Fortunately, the God that was with the disciples that day in that boat still stands with us, dwells in our hearts and sustains our world. Just as he stood and told the wind and the seas to calm, so he can tell the tempests of our lives, the difficulties and strife that we are experiencing, to fall away to peace and joy. He may ask us where our faith is once the storm is over, and remind us that we are stronger and can be braver and more confident when we call on the name of the Lord in our moments of trouble. If you want to know what the disciples experienced at that moment, look no further than Philippians  4:6-7  

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 

It can be hard to be calm and peaceful as our lives rage around us, with so many things out of our control, even when we have walked to where we are clearly following the Word of God. Know, though, that the Lord will quiet your storms, and will give you a peace that just can’t be understood, and He will guard your heart and your mind. 

Have peace...be still and KNOW that God is with you, and loves you.

 Marcos 4:35-41 Aquel día, al anochecer, les dijo: «Pasemos a la otra orilla». Después de despedir a la multitud, lo llevaron consigo en la barca, tal como estaba; y otras barcas lo acompañaban. Se desató un viento huracanado, y las olas rompían contra la barca de tal manera que ya se llenaba. Y Jesús mismo estaba en la popa, durmiendo sobre un cabezal; y lo despertaron y le dijeron: «Maestro, ¿no te importa que perezcamos?». Y se levantó, reprendió al viento y dijo al mar: «Calla, enmudece». Y el viento amainó y todo quedó en calma. Y les dijo: «¿Por qué tienen miedo? ¿Aún no tienen fe?». Se asustaron mucho y se decían unos a otros: «¿Quién es este, que hasta el viento y el mar le obedecen?».  

Esta historia también se relata en Mateo 8:23-27: 

 Cuando subió a la barca, sus discípulos lo siguieron. De repente, se desató una violenta tempestad en el mar, de modo que las olas cubrían la barca; pero Jesús dormía. Se acercaron y lo despertaron, diciendo: «¡Sálvanos, Señor, que perecemos!». Él les dijo: «¿Por qué tienen miedo, hombres de poca fe?». Entonces se levantó y reprendió a los vientos y al mar, y todo quedó en calma. Los hombres, asombrados, decían: «¿Qué clase de hombre es este, que hasta los vientos y el mar le obedecen?». 

 Finalmente, en Lucas 8:22-25: 

 Un día, Jesús y sus discípulos subieron a una barca y les dijo: «Pasemos al otro lado del lago». Así que se hicieron a la mar. Pero mientras navegaban, él se durmió. Un viento huracanado azotó el lago, y comenzaron a inundarse y a correr peligro. Se acercaron a Jesús y lo despertaron, diciendo: "¡Maestro, Maestro, perecemos!". Él se levantó y reprendió al viento y a las olas, y cesaron, y todo se calmó. Les dijo: "¿Dónde está vuestra fe?". Pero ellos, atemorizados y asombrados, se decían unos a otros: "¿Quién es este, que manda incluso a los vientos y al agua, y le obedecen?". 

En las tres historias, Jesús guía a sus discípulos a la barca. Imaginen lo reconfortante que sería saber que están siguiendo la voluntad de Dios, que él está AHÍ MISMO guiándolos y diciéndoles qué hacer. Al vivir, estudiamos la palabra de Dios para discernir, con esperanza, lo bueno, lo correcto y lo hermoso. Oramos por fuerza y sabiduría para seguir su voluntad y sus caminos en todo. Es fácil pensar que nuestro servicio a Dios sería mucho más fácil si tan solo tuviéramos a Jesús en carne y hueso, caminando con nosotros, diciéndonos qué hacer y viendo con nuestros propios ojos lo que Él elige y cómo vive. Todo marcha bien mientras se alejan, y Jesús se va a descansar. Es fácil imaginar que estaban bastante seguros de estar justo donde debían estar, haciendo lo que debían hacer. 

 Pero entonces llega la tormenta. 

 De repente, estos hombres fieles ya no confían en estar en el seno del Señor, sino que claman: "¿No te importa que perezcamos?" y "¡Sálvanos, Señor!". Claramente, todos han olvidado que siguieron a Jesús en las barcas y que están haciendo la voluntad de Dios con tanta claridad y confianza, siguiendo el mandato o ejemplo de Jesús minutos, o quizás horas, antes. El "Sí, Señor" ha desaparecido, reemplazado por "¿Por qué, Señor?" y dudas sobre el amor de Dios por ellos. 

 ¡Cuánto nos parecemos a estos discípulos! Dios nos bendice con todo lo que podamos necesitar y mucho más. Nos ha guiado a todos en la barca y nos ha indicado hacia dónde navegar, y cada uno ha seguido su voz, ha hecho lo que nos pidió, y eso nos ha traído a este momento de nuestras vidas. Pero en cuanto las cosas se ponen difíciles, cuando los vientos se arremolinan, cuando el mar se agita, y empezamos a dudar de nosotros mismos y de nuestro Dios, clamamos lo mismo. Quizás sea la naturaleza humana, un instinto que tenemos, igual que nuestros antepasados en la fe. Cuando las cosas van bien y seguir es fácil, lo hacemos con confianza y sacamos fuerza y valentía de ello. Pero cuando seguir se vuelve difícil, cuando las olas se levantan y rompen sobre la barca, cuando nuestros planes se arruinan o cuando enfrentamos desafíos, nuestro "estamos contigo, Señor" cambia rápidamente a "¿por qué?" y "sálvanos". 

 Por suerte, el Dios que estuvo con los discípulos ese día en esa barca sigue con nosotros, mora en nuestros corazones y sostiene nuestro mundo. Así como se puso de pie y ordenó al viento y al mar que se calmaran, también puede ordenar a las tempestades de nuestra vida, a las dificultades y a los conflictos que experimentamos, que se conviertan en paz y alegría. Él puede preguntarnos dónde está nuestra fe una vez que la tormenta pase, y recordarnos que somos más fuertes, más valientes y más confiados cuando invocamos el nombre del Señor en nuestros momentos de dificultad. Si quieres saber lo que experimentaron los discípulos en ese momento, no busques más allá de Filipenses 4:6-7. 

No se inquieten por nada; más bien, en toda ocasión, mediante oración y ruego, con acción de gracias, presenten sus peticiones a Dios. Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará sus corazones y sus pensamientos en Cristo Jesús. 

 Puede ser difícil estar tranquilo y en paz mientras la vida nos azota, con tantas cosas fuera de nuestro control, incluso cuando hemos llegado a donde estamos siguiendo claramente la Palabra de Dios. Sin embargo, sepan que el Señor calmará sus tormentas y les dará una paz incomprensible, y guardará su corazón y su mente. 

 Tengan paz... estén tranquilos y sepan que Dios está con ustedes y los ama.
