Love foreigners as you love yourselves, because you were foreigners one time in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.
Leviticus 19:34

Thank you, Let’s continue to help!

Arlington Church has already helped three families with furnishings, school supplies, food and clothing (and we’ve been able to help other churches and non-profits with goods for several additional families.)  Thank you all for donating your time, your goods and your money to this effort.  While these families have their basic needs met at this time, they still have a long way to go to establish themselves in this country.  As a church we continue to walk beside these families on their journey, identifying needs and helping them meet the challenges.

Here several ways you can help:
  • Watch the Alert.  Needs change over time.  We will announce if we need things like clothes, laptops, school supplies, etc.
  • Alert us to job opportunities.  The biggest need in this community is meaningful employment.  If you know of appropriate employment, please let us know.  If you are good at resume writing, perhaps you can help reframe resumes to specific jobs.
  • Visit families and practice English with them.  We’ve provided these families with a whole range of easy to read children’s books.  It is wonderful to listen to an eight year old sound out words or help a father figure out how to get from here to there on transit.  Each time we visit we demonstrate we care and have an opportunity to find other ways to help.
  • Connect refugees to community resources.  We have compiled a list of available resources in the Northern Virginia area.  Here it is in English and here in Dari. We may be able to help with tuition and books for these programs.  Let the church know if assistance is needed.
  • Pray.  Pray for jobs.  Pray for their peace of mind-many went through very difficult times getting here. Pray that they can learn English and the other skills needed to navigate life in America.  Pray that we may be examples of Christ in this community.  Pray for those who are still coming.
  • Donate.  The Agape Trust continues to maintain funds to help this community and others who need house, food and medical assistance and the church’s refugee assistance fund let us meet immediate needs.  We do not need additional furniture or household supplies at this time.
